Will Dara ever accept her queer identity and find love with a woman?Īlthough this book is categorized as adult fiction, it works well as a crossover into young adult fiction.

After the Warden’s death, Dara moves into her own trailer and struggles to maintain healthy relationships with her stepdaughters while fighting to accept her attractions to women. She becomes fast friends with one of the inmates, Huddie Ledbetter (who will one day become the blues singer, Lead Belly), and after many years of service, marries the Warden, becoming a wife and stepmother to his two girls. Separated and unable to be together, Dara escapes to Sugar Land, where she works in the prison kitchen and tries to hide her past. The two fall in love, but they are discovered by Rhodie’s mother. Working in a local egg store, she meets Rhodie, another young woman who becomes her best friend. Midland, Texas, in the 1920s is the only home Dara has ever known.
